UPDATE: The BOKU team has informed participants today that the mapathon unfortunately has to be cancelled due to unforeseen difficulties.

BOKU and Médecins Sans Frontières are organising another mapathon on Monday, 16 December 2019, starting at 6 p.m. at TÜWI at BOKU.

At a mapathon, mappers meet and map a task from a HOT project to support people and, above all, the aid organisations working there after disasters. The mappers meet at one location and bring their laptops and mice. The organiser provides electricity, food and drinks.

The Salzburg geo-Stammtisch ‘Maptime’ is organising a Mapaton ( = joint OpenStreetMap mapping) on Wednesday, 8 May 2019!

Here is an excerpt from the original announcement from http://maptime.io/salzburg/event/2019/05/08/Mapthon/:

The next Maptime event will take place in the form of a humanitarian mapping marathon. We will work together to digitise geodata such as houses or streets using satellite images and upload them to OpenStreetMap. This data is then used by organisations such as Médecins Sans Frontières to better plan their missions. No prior knowledge is necessary for digitisation. We will provide an introduction and explain everything relevant. There will be free drinks, snacks (sponsored by Z_GIS) and music. Please bring:

At ‘mapping parties’, volunteers help to put neglected crisis regions on the map. This data is important for the work of aid organisations so that they can react faster and in a more targeted manner in the event of a crisis. The Red Cross and Médecins Sans Frontières are jointly organising a mapathon on 22 March to mark World Water Day.

Who can participate?

Anyone can participate, whether you are a beginner or an experienced mapper. All you need to bring is your own laptop (including a mouse).
